|Anotace:||The doctoral study programme is intended for outstanding graduates of the consecutive (follow-on) English Philology master?s degree and related programmes. The aim of the programme is to educate highly qualified experts in English and comparative linguistics and English and American literature, or other Anglophone literatures. The programme also helps to raise the level of staff qualifications at higher education institutions, and provides experienced and qualified teachers with the opportunity to achieve professional career growth and contribute to the further development of the discipline. The PhD programme will be implemented in two specialisations. The aim of the linguistic-oriented specialisation is to educate highly qualified experts in English and comparative linguistics who are able to work independently to address methodological and practical issues in the field of synchronic and diachronic linguistics. The aim of the literature-oriented specialisation is to educate highly qualified experts in English and American literature (or other literatures in English) who are able to work independently to address methodological and practical issues in the theory and history of these literatures and their reception in a literary and general societal context. The general aim of the PhD programme is to develop the students? capacity for scientific work, critical thinking, and argumentation. The students are systematically encouraged to be able to present and defend the results of their research and discuss them with experts in the respective fields.|

1. Discipline-Specific Knowledge
Graduates have knowledge of basic issues of philosophy with a focus on the subject of study. They are competent with academic work methods in the given field and familiar with the latest trends in the chosen field. Their knowledge demonstrates to be deeper and the theoretical knowledge, thinking and skills gained in the previous master?s studies of English are supplemented and developed. The linguistics-oriented graduates demonstrate knowledge of the history of Czech and international linguistics (see courses: History of linguistics, Czech/Slovak English studies and the Prague school) with a particular emphasis on the historical and interdisciplinary context (see: English from the historical and sociolinguistic perspective). Graduates demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of literatures in English, with a special focus on British and American literature. They also demonstrate knowledge of minority literatures outside the mainstream, specifically the works of ethnic authors and counterculture. They are fully conversant with the terminology of literary theory and display knowledge of the main theoretical approaches influencing the interpretation of literary works. They are aware of key methods of research in the field of literary studies. Their knowledge demonstrates a development of the theoretical knowledge and awareness of literary theory and literature in English gained as part of their previous master's studies.
2. Discipline-Specific Skills
Graduates are able to interpret factual knowledge acquired as part of their studies and to apply this knowledge in their independent research and publications (Doctoral seminar). Graduates are highly qualified experts in English Linguistics, or Literature. They have an excellent knowledge of the field, including an awareness of its broad social and philosophical contexts (cf. Philosophy examination). They are able to work independently on assigned tasks and to present the results of their work in a manner that takes into account modern trends in communication technologies (Conference, publication). In addition to English, they are also competent users of another major language (Foreign language examination).
Graduates understand the interconnections between language, culture and society in English-speaking countries, and they are able to apply this understanding in addressing current issues connected e.g. with migration and globalisation (English as a lingua franca). The graduates of the literature section are able to conceive and implement their own research projects which contribute to the ongoing development of knowledge related to literatures in English.
3. General Skills
Thanks to their language competence, discipline-specific and specialist knowledge and skills, graduates are able to pursue professional careers at university English departments, research institutions, research libraries, archives, publishers, other expert/academic institutions in the Czech Republic and abroad (see International Study Stay), or at secondary schools. They are capable of participating in national and international research projects (Research project), and/or coordinating such projects. They are also able to undertake further pedagogical and discipline-specific education and self-education.

The entrance examination takes the form of a discussion on the applicant's proposed dissertation project (set out in a document which the applicant submits as an appendix to their application). In the research proposal, the applicant specifies the topic and objective of the work and demonstrates its theoretical and methodological preparedness for the PhD programme studies as well as knowledge of the relevant secondary literature. The applicant also defines the specificity and structure of the project as well as its contribution to the field. The project should also include a bibliography of works cited which are related to the research proposal's subject matter. The examination is an expert discussion on the submitted dissertation project proposal while the applicant's prerequisites for academic work, knowledge of the given field and of expert literature as well as the ability of individual academic thinking are being verified and evaluated. The examination is held before a committee. The evaluation of the applicant's expertise is positively affected by its previous publication or project activities as well as its active participation at conferences. The discussion will prove the applicant's prerequisites for the PhD studies and academic work. This interview (or the major hereof) is conducted in English.

Entrance examinations are scheduled for 9-13 September 2019. All applicants will receive (via e-mail) an invitation to the entrance examination stating the precise date and venue of the examination.

For the studies in the English language we charge the fee of 42 000,- CZK (cca 1 650 Euros) for the academic year.
