Second announcement
The Vojtěch Jarník Mathematical Competition is an
international mathematical competition intended for university students
of mathematics. It is held at the University of Ostrava every year in
March or April. This year it will be held on Wednesday, 9th April
1997.
This competition is divided into two categories. Category I is
intended for the students of the first and second year and
Category II is intended for the students of the third, fourth and
fifth year.
A Competition Committee (we will use the CC abbreviation in the
following) will be formed the day before the Competition (on Tuesday,
8th April 1997). The CC consists of university delegates; every
participating university sends one delegate.
The CC will choose competition problems and evaluate them. In each of
the categories, there will be four mathematical problems and one
programming problem. For every problem, a certain number of points is
stated. Students will have three hours to solve the problems. The
members of the CC will evaluate the students' solutions and award a
certain number of points for each of the solutions. The total number of
points received by a student is equal to the sum of the points for the
first three mathematical problems plus the maximum of the number of
points for the fourth mathematical problem and of the number of points
for the programming problem. (In other words, the fourth problem will
offer an alternative.) At the end of the competition the CC will make
the table of the final placing of the participants.
Only the winners of each category will be officially announced by the
CC. If a student does not have the sufficient number of points, his/her
name will not be published. Certainly, he/she will be able to see
his/her results unofficially.
The official language is English. Students can write solutions in their
native language under the condition that this language is the native
language of at least one member of the CC.
Every delegate to the CC should bring one problem for Category I
and one problem for Category II with him. Other problems are
welcome. It is supposed that the students do not know the problems.
There is no limit on the number of students from one university, but
there are usually two students per university in each category. A
student can participate without the agreement of his/her
university.
There is no participating fee. The competition is sponsored by the
University of Ostrava. The student on the first, second and third place
receives CZK 500, CZK 300 and CZK 200, respectively, in
both categories.
