Doc. RNDr. Petr ŠINDLER, CSc.
* 9.5.1944

Born on 9th May, 1944 in Dvůr Králové nad Labem . There he completed primary and secondary education. From 1963 to 1968 he studied geography at the Faculty of Science, Charles University. After a successful defence of his doctoral thesis entitled 
´The Ostrava Agglomeration and Conception of Settlement´ and after passing the doctoral exam , in 1992 he was conferred a degree of Doctor of Natural Science (RNDr.). Having completed an external research assistantship and successfully defended his candidate dissertation entitled ´Regions of Czechoslovak Republic as Spatial Territorial Systems´, he was awarded an academic rank of Candidate of Geographical Science (CSc. = Ph.D.) in socioeconomic geography at the Faculty of Science, Comenius University, Bratislava. In 1990 he was conferred a degree of Senior Lecturer in regional geography at the Faculty of Science, Charles University. In 1999 he successfully defended his habilitation thesis entitled ´Regional Development and Regional Policy. Experience from  research  into Ostrava agglomeration´ and with effect from 
1st  January, 2000 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in economics. 
 From 1968 to 1981 he worked as a researcher at the Research Institute for the Development of Regions  and Cities in Ostrava. Since 1981 he has been working as 
a university teacher, first at the Pedagogic Faculty in Ostrava, and since 1991 at the Faculty 
of Science at Ostrava University, where he headed the Department of Social Geography and Regional Development for several years. The main fields of interest in his teaching and research work are as follows : geography of settlements, urban geography and urbanization processes, political geography, issues of the development of border areas, regional development and regional policy. 
Since 1 October, 2000 he has held the office of Dean of Faculty of Science at Ostrava University.
